Demons, D.A.P.S. and Doubt.

Tracking down the Dark things in Denton, TX.

It was a dark and chilly night. The skies in north Texas were clear and crisp. It was a great night for Bob, until he had to slam on his breaks because he saw something. He saw the creature that nips at his waking thoughts now. It wakes him up from a dead sleep. Its minions interloping upon every night now, whispering…calling. Tormenting. Even seeming to stalk his friends. Lights pop up outside of his home. Friends and co-workers report lights in the sky, over their houses…in their dreams now too. The Daemon of Denton. His interest in the unknown and dark and unexplained brought to fruition before his very eyes. As the Story goes, my source "Bob" was caught on his way home from a movie by a celestial incident or some forgotten creature of relics past, or an extra-terrestrial planet crasher? I won’t force my opinion on you fair readers quite yet. "Bob" relays that this creature crossed the street in front of him, left to right, with an un-earthly speed (imagine that), stops under a street light and looks at him, and slips through an open gate on the right side of the street (Lance Oliver, leader and founder of D.A.P.S. on http://www.ufocasebook.com/ under forum saying the gate was slightly open, and my recorded interview his recount is slightly different). I initially contacted Lance after seeing the drawing of the creature on coasttocoastam.com and expressed interest in following up on the creature "Bob" sighted. For a more creative and thorough account, do a Google search for "creature of copper canyon" and read the excerpt in an accompanying section below.

There are a hundred accounts of things over Texas skies lately. Real accounts and very reliable sources are coming forward. People who see these things are told to be quiet, so this is no new occurrence. Put as much credence in these sightings as you like. Doubt if you need to, but there is something going on in Texas.

Now, back to my opining: I’ve been trained to look for certain things and I do my absolute damndest to be objective and open minded. I met with the source; we are calling "Bob" as well as Lance, and a few other people from the D.A.P.S crew in Denton, including the artist who illustrated the now infamous/dubious creature. I recorded the entire evening digitally, including the entire "site" investigation. I have to say, while Lance is a great guy and most likely a thorough investigator, he seemed to dictate the pace of the interview and seemed to lead things, including "Bob’s" own telling of the story. I’ll only add a few of the things I noticed about the situation and then move on. As I mentioned earlier, Bob stated the creature moved from one side of the street to the other, and moved or slid, depending on the account source, through an open or slightly opened gate. The gate of which I speak, is a ranch style gate, leading to a few acres and a house off a ways from the gate and street. The time is very late, after midnight, about 1:35. I can with almost absolute certainty say; I don’t believe this gate was open(the gate was closed and locked when I investigated.) If people who owned gates wanted an open area around their property, they wouldn’t have gates. People and Texans especially, with gates like this, close them for two reasons: to keep things out, and to keep things in. Outside of that, both the source and the source’s friend, who is a self declared graphic artist that is applying for a copyright for the depiction of the creature, (which makes not an ounce of sense as copyrighted material is public knowledge and his identity will be instantly revealed) want to remain anonymous. I agreed to respect that, but can honestly find no legitimate reason for their desire to do so. I’ve met many unnamed sources who have good reason to remain that way for fear of ridicule or retribution or retaliation. Policemen have come forward. Politicians have come forward. Pilots even. The list goes on and on. Many of these people have also kept private for good reasons, and I respect and understand why. These sources however, are not those of those inclinations or professions. They have a predisposed inclination towards things like this. They are already prepared to believe in instances like, because they already do believe in these things. Perhaps that’s why they are keeping their identities secret. I believe that their identities take away credibility with the sighting and drawing. Upon investigation, I found there to be no skid marks at the scene, which clearly should exist, as the account relayed by Lance to http://www.ufocasebook.com/ states that Bob slammed on his breaks. The description and coloration of the creature was a little whacky as well. Being on the scene, it is quite hard, even at 20 feet (it was actually closer to 30 paces, I walked them out) and with the yellow light of the street lamp to make out detail. The street is raised a few feet from the surrounding ground, which makes things look taller when something moves from the street to the ground. The area is also littered with air traffic. There were no air born craft sightings, but the area is well traveled for an out of the way road, and these little features lead me in my investigation. Lance pointed out that Bob turned his high beams on the creature (again, leaving the scene, I turned on my high beams and the difference with the high beams is negligible) and that helped illuminate the creature. All of these things, combined with knowing the sources identities, leads me to believe I smell a fish. There was simply too much time between the sighting in January to the posting in March, and all of the investigations that followed. I won’t come out and say the story is concocted, that’s not for me to decide or declare. Although, I will say there are enough signs that Lance and his crew cannot dispel, that tell me this sighting can’t be taken further. Not by me anyway. Not to say it didn’t happen, just that I have enough doubt and lack of evidence to say I can not try to convince others that it did happen. I said I would keep them (Bob and Todd) off the record, or their real names, but I’m obligated to have this little caveat before other investigators trudge out in the middle of the night and cold for miles like I did.

I spent enough time with Lance Oliver to say I think he is brilliant and creative, and great to drink a few beers with. He’s great to talk about everything from hieroglyphs to Atlantis with. I know he’s searching for the truth, and I hope the truth finds him.

Now here’s another of my "althoughs."You’ll notice a few of these through my articles, and especially this one. They may be confusing, and for that
I apologize. Honestly, I am confused; confused on what to believe. I wanted nothing more then to find and get the scoop and be the first to break this. It’s one of he reasons why I went ahead and included the Copper Canyon portion this in the article. Luckily for me, it’s not my job to have an opinion. I only have to bring to light the things I’ve found. For that, I offer no apologies. You can find the "although" below.


Although I can say with all honesty, once I met Lance, strange things began happening. Coincidence? Yes; that’s what a coincidence is. It is however, deliciously relevant to what I am writing about though, so here it is.

When we pulled away from the site, I noticed an unmarked police car pass us on the way to where we were. A little further down the twisting road, a tanker usually used for carrying things like hydrogen, or volatile chemicals, was pulling in to a private ranch estate. After 10 pm. I was at home eating dinner discussing the incident and I went outside on my patio to smoke a cigarette, and noticed three very large distinct lights in the sky. The classic giant triangle in the sky. I’ll save the description as I don’t think my sighting will hold much merit or induce any investigations. Mine is one of possibly thousands like it.

What I DO believe is of note is the investigation I went on with Lance to the Emily Fowler Library. I went on the investigation with no expectations of finding anything. I completely put it out of my head that I would find anything. Not only did I get some interesting light and photographic anomalies (see attached photos), I actually caught an E.V.P. and disembodied voice on my trusty digital recorder. For those that do not know, E.V.P. stands for electronic voice phenomenon. Voices that show up on recordings that did not show up or were not heard during recording. Lance was asking the host spirit, which he believes is a little girl, if she liked the doll that they had left for her on a previous investigation. He then asks if she named the doll. Then out of the darkness and monotony of the library, "Nate". I’ve had three other people listen to the recording, and all concur that it is a little girl’s voice, and it says either Nate or Kate. The only people in the vicinity of my digital recorder were me Lance and I. Lance couldn’t coax out that voice even with a swift kick to his cahones’. Besides, I was right next to Lance, and Lance didn’t whisper anything or say anything. Right before that, we heard a loud tap above our heads, and I heard a brisk breathing sound. I flashed a picture and Lance flashed his light, but nothing was there. Reviewing the digital tape, I found both noises, crystal clear and haunting. The investigation and Library itself seemed pretty uninteresting; except for the above mentioned phenomenon and the great crew of folks I met there. I’m leaving all of them out of the article, names especially, because they’re all hard working normal folk looking for the truth and I don’t want there to be any potential problems with their employers.


In my continuing effort to bring you cool underground things in the Dallas area, I went out and Followed Lance and D.A.P.S. and found that there are dark things that inhabit Denton and Dallas. They do seem to follow Lance Oliver. Not always the other way around.

"Having caught a late night movie at a theater in the area, Bob dropped off his friend, Todd, before heading home. With the soaring price of gas, Bob decided to take a deserted country road back to his place, which served as a shortcut. Around 2:00AM in the early morning of Jan 21st, Bob drove East on Copper Canyon Rd. Driving over a railroad crossing, at a sharp bend in the road, something otherworldly suddenly appeared from behind a tree to his left!

The photo above (link) was taken of the illustration Todd drew, after Bob reported to him that he’d seen an "alien" in late January.

Slamming on his brakes, Bob was stunned as a thin, gaunt, hairless, long arm, long legged creature, suddenly was caught in the high beams of his headlights. Less than 20 feet away, this weird, 5 foot tall, slumped forward, long fingered entity darted smoothly across the road, alarmingly in 2 seconds flat! However, the real shocker came when it stopped under the yellow light of a streetlamp looming overhead, then turned, glancing in his direction!

Like the eyes of a cat, yellow light reflected back at Bob as he tried fighting off the fear of the unknown. A riot of conflicting emotions and questions flooded over him. What the hell was it? What was it going to do?

Even as all this began welling up, he stared wide-eyed and shaken, as the unexplained nocturnal visitor silently turned and resumed fast, gracefully sliding strides, thankfully away to his right. Bob’s mind whirled as he watched it quickly squeeze through the partially open gate of a driveway. Within moments, while Bob’s lungs finally filled with short, agitated breaths, the thing vanished into a line of woods on the far side of a field to the SE."

I met up with The Lollie Bombs © Sunday in their stalking grounds in Dallas. I can’t reveal the location or actually confirm that it was in Dallas, although I suspect the drugs they used to knock me out were short acting as I made it home before dawn, which should tell me something. If you’re not familiar with the Lollie Bombs© yet: They are a modern burlesque group made up of between 7 sometimes 10 uniquely styled, built, and brilliant women. They perform in Dallas and around Texas what can only be described as revolutionary and often ground breaking sexually fueled routines that often lead to nearly naked bodies writhing in flame, sweat, glitter and unadulterated femme-power. It harkens back to the juke joints of the pre and post depression and vaudeville. Pointed and clever comedic routines wrapped in archetypes that would make Freud toss out all his notions and call his mother and apologize. It is marked though by a real and genuine acknowledgement of the time in which we all currently exist: without being pessimistic, or really too joyous either. It seems about the moment right here with you right now.

I met with Roxie and Ms. Lawless, two of the senior members of the troupe, as well as Ryan, who is their liaison extraordinaire. He serves, in his description, as a conduit and sounding board: Voicing their concerns and professional vision to the world. Not at all the typical manager type and a visionary take on the role. A theme you’ll find common with the Lollie Bombs©. The crew was fashionably late, as I expected. You can’t expect women who control undulating hypnotized masses of fans that pay 15 bones a head to admire them, to cater to my whim. I think It helps solidify the mystique as well. We sat down outside and I immediately was struck by their laid back and open nature. Ryan brought a book of Sudoku problems and kicked back like he was at home. Roxie Moxie is the self declared smallest Lollie. Her features are one part classic Bettie Page and one part contemporary vixen. Her chin length brown hair streaked with pinkish tones and she was dressed in casual glamour. Ms. Lawless seemed the epitome of ominous and reserved command. I think it was nearly half an hour before I was able to see her eyes behind her  hair, black as her glasses and her eyes were as brilliant and piercing as “Quoth the Raven…never more.” They offered up to my questions better then I ever expected and we shared a great deal of laughs. It was a truly informative day.
Richard: Give me your elevator pitch for the Lollie bombs©
Roxie: I would call us I guess modern Burlesque. If you took Burlesque and put it in a meat grinder, put a lot of sequins and sparkles and cool music with it and saw what came out, that would be a good description of what we do. We do stripping in the shows so in that way it is very classic Burlesque. Almost all of our pieces incorporate stripping in some way. We’re very focused on making a production so it’s very much like making a variety show in a way. Not every piece is dancing. There is acting and…
Lawless: We’ve had magicians and comedians too.
Roxie: We try to make the show kind of a breakneck speed because people have such a TV mentality. They want something new coming at them every second. We try to make shows that keep people constantly guessing as to what comes next. Everything we do is tailored to the individual girl. Each girl decides her persona and her routine
Lawless: We don’t dictate to the girls what they should or shouldn’t do. We allow them to come up with their own ideas. Everything is basically in the individuals hands.
Richard: That leads me to the next question: Everyone comes up with their own routine. Does that then go to a committee?
Roxie: It’s not that formal.
Lawless: If a girl has an idea we have auditions for the pieces. If a girl comes up with an idea we talk about it and encourage her or…discourage her (everyone laughs). Usually it’s really good.
Lawless: We have a choreographer that helps us with group numbers.
Roxie: We have a few group numbers which is three or more girls in the number. Some of the girls choreograph their own stuff but it’s very much a collaborative effort.
Richard: You would consider yourselves modern Burlesque?
Lawless: Definitely.  We’ve had Butoh…What are some of the other dance forms we’ve had?
Roxie: We’ve done everything from contemporary to Ballet. I have a classic number to summer wind. Then we have very modern stuff that even verges on disturbing in some ways.(laughs)
Lawless: We’re the punk rockers of Burlesque (laughs)
Roxie: Most of us have colored hair and tattoos. We’re not there to be cutesy.
Richard: How long are the numbers, an hour and a half or two hours?
Roxie: It depends really. At the Pocket sandwich theater it’s been and hour and a half with the intermission. Pocket sandwich was difficult last time because we sold out. There were so many people that they had a line outside. We didn’t start until half an hour forty five minutes after we were supposed to.
Lawless: We’re not complaining (laughs).
Richard: I read you won the Best ensemble group with the “Seven Deadly Sins” number at the Burlesque Festival? How did that award affect you?
Lawless: We’re the punk rockers of Burlesque (laughs)
Roxie: Most of us have colored hair and tattoos. We’re not there to be cutesy.
Richard: How long are the numbers, an hour and a half or two hours?

Lawless: I write my own music. I usually have one piece that I sing for each show whenever we’re in theatres.
Richard: you compose your own music. Do you write on piano?
Lawless: It’s industrial. It’s old school industrial. I use a lot of machine sounds. It’s like industrial hip/hop.
Richard: what about training?
Lawless: I studied music my whole life. I Went to Richfield. Now I write everything in the computer.
Richard: Fans ever get out of hand at your shows?
Roxie: Every once and awhile fans who have the wrong idea about Burlesque throw money on the stage. They don’t really understand that it’s not that kind of stripping. We don’t make the money strippers make. I wish we did because it would help pay for costumes.
Richard: Is there anything that you could suggest to your fans that would be proper behavior?
Lawless: A nice way to say don’t touch. (laughs)
Roxie: We want you to stand up and shout and get involved. Dance to the music. Cheer us on you know? Because we’re doing this to draw the audience in to participate in the show. We want you to clap along with the beat. We do this because we love it. Part of it is audience participation. When the audience really gets it… it can be an amazing show. People don’t know what to expect and we love that. What do we call that? Shock and awe Burlesque (laughs) We don’t want the women to feel uncomfortable. We want them to feel just as excited as men are. We actually have a fan club of all women now. We have merchandise now; we are a brand.
Richard: When you go on stage do you have routines or superstitions? Like total quiet…all blue M&M’s? (Laughs)
Lawless: Actually we have a joke about that but it’s green M&M’s. (laughs)
Roxie: we don’t really have any set routines. There are so many of us. We have the Bomb squad: which are usually the husbands, fiancés, and boy friends.
Lawless: it’s pretty much a mad house before the show
Roxie: Exactly. I wouldn’t say we have a set routine.
Richard: Personal ticks or superstitions? Like some baseball players can’t walk on the white lines or people who don’t walk on the cracks of the concrete. (laughs)
Lawless: I practice. (laughs)
Ryan: Not wearing the same dirty panties since the first of the year (laughs).
Roxie: make sure all of my clothes are washed. Make sure I have enough Pastie tape. Half a glass of wine and I limit myself before I go on stage. That’s about the only thing I do that’s a set routine. When there’s a new song or routine I do a little breathing and concentrate on the routine. I meditate on it.
Richard: Nothing for you Lawless? You’re just a bad ass and go with it huh? (Laughs)
Lawless: NO! (laughing) Don’t get me wrong I get nervous whenever I’m out there singing which, doesn’t make a lot of sense because I’m usually not getting undressed, everyone else is (laughs). Before the singing starts I’m usually behind the curtain breathing; trying to find my center. There’s not really a routine. Singing seems a hell of a lot more intimate to me then dancing.
Richard: You write your own music and lyrics too so..
Lawless: It’s a little closer to home.
Richard: When did you decide, this is my craft, this is what I want to do?
Roxie: I have about 15 years dance training. I never thought I’d be taking my clothes off. Angi B. Lovely (another founder) are friends and she said “I’ve got this idea, I want to start this Burlesque Troupe and I think you’d be really great in it. What do you think? She said she had a few other people and a venue. Then she met Lawless. I can’t remember how she got in contact with you.
Lawless: Actually I got in contact with her. I wanted a Burlesque troupe for years and years and years. I’ve been in bands my whole life surrounded by boys. The last band I was in I said That’s it! I want a dance troupe and I want them Naked! ( Laughs) I started imagining whole shows in my head. I spent a year and a half fantasizing just seeing all the different dances and costumes. I told my friend Christi Love and six months later she calls me and says there’s this girl and she has access to this theater and she’s getting together a burlesque troupe. I immediately called them. That’s how I met them.
Roxie: So that’s how we got started. It was very difficult to get started.
Lawless: It was.
Roxie: It was very difficult to get started because it was difficult to get everyone to commit to a rehearsal schedule and to come up with routines. We didn’t have a clear idea of what Burlesque was either.
Lawless: I didn’t care.
Roxie: Yeah (laughs)
Lawless: I had all these ideas and Angi says let’s hear it. We started with Butoh which is not burlesque at all.
Roxie: I was the one who said” Guys you can’t have Burlesque if you don’t have stripping. “ You watch the old video of these girls stripping and you see Gypsy Rose Lee and all of those girls. Really all they did was they took their pretty costumes off to their pasties. I was always a proponent of if you want to do Burlesque, you’ve got to have stripping. Then things kind of morphed. We started adding new girls to the mix and each one brought something to the mix. A new facet we’d never thought about before I guess.
Richard: At sometime both of you realized: Hey I’m a woman and that’s not a secondary role. When did you realize that as a woman, you naturally have a power over men and sometimes women? (laughs)
Roxie: I don’t know if it was a realization .Hey Lawless why don’t you talk? (Laughs)
Lawless: Maybe the first time I kissed a boy? (laughs)
Richard: Like I have this under control. I can rule the world! (laughs)
Lawless: I can rule the world with my boobies.(laughs). I was a dancer for about 7 years and it changed my life .Becoming a dancer I became more comfortable with people and my body. That’s something that being naked on stage teaches you. You have to be comfortable with your body and your imperfections. Burlesque changed my life in a very good way. It’s allowed me to open up and free myself.
Richard: What traits make you sexy, or anyone sexy?
Roxie: A self confidence.
Lawless: Attitude. Yeah and a level or nerdiness (laughs)
Roxie: I agree with that too. Intelligence combined with a level of confidence that’s not over reaching. Insecurity is not sexy.
Richard: Ok. Diamonds or roses?
Roxie: Diamonds
Lawless: I would sell diamonds. (laughs) I love roses. I would only want them so I could sell them:
Ryan: You could cut glass or concrete.
Roxie: Diamonds in platinum settings.
Richard: World Peace or your own island?
Lawless: I would really like world peace.
Roxie: I would settle for peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. That would make me happy. That will never happen but…
Richard: Yeah that’s a two thousand year old problem. Good compromise though.
Roxie: Yeah you’re right.
Richard: That’s great. Thanks for taking the time to meet with me. It was great.
Roxie: Sure thing.
Lawless: No problem.

Beautifully rendered dust covered tales from off the beaten track

This is a record with an enormous appeal; the broken fractured heart that drives the songs and the materials that they are built from combine so well together that they prove almost addictive. The songs are like wreckage ripped from a palace of song - they are base coats that allow rawness to show through. This Same Heart is a voice and acoustic guitars, emotion and music trying to make sense of something that is unreasonable; Blue is cut from the same cloth as the stately melancholia of Sophia. The songs themselves are like fragments of longer narratives and he fully inhabits the characters marooned in them, his croaky sing-speak perfect for Ballad of a Skinwalker whilst a more hopeful voice narrates Butterflies and Coyotes. Romeo 58 is a 50s song story as performed by the Tall Dwarves.

Londoners Guide to Southland is like a drunken dream, voices popping up out of nowhere as the tune staggers around, occasionally tries to gets to its feet, has moments of lucidity and a suitably sing-along chorus with rambling half-sensible verses. Hold On is an altogether different type of a dream; this one is rooted in anxiety, the persistent percussive throb of the guitar replicating the aching tiredness of too many nights spent in shallow sleep waiting for the phone to ring, the vocals mumbling like they don’t want to be clear about the subject and all the while the screen door in your mind bangs on its loose hinge. Each of these songs is unremarkable in themselves - put them together and they really start to add up to something, and by the time you get to the mandolin inspired Amazing Grace which for once actually sounds like it comes from someone who knows what wretched is you want to learn more, to listen again and immerse yourself in these disjointed scenes. As a bonus the first 100 come with an individual photograph: mine shows an empty highway and ugly town and a beautiful mountain and if that doesn’t sum up the record, then nothing does.

Chaste machine is the debut album from an exceptionally talented singer songwriter. The music is more complex than it appears on the surface. Delve into the nooks and crannies of it, and you will be amazed at the obvious talent so modestly put on display here. I love the haunting voice and lyrics of "A Trailer Park Fairy Tale", the Layering in "The Pacifist", and the raw emotion in the timeless cover "Amazing Grace". If you really, and truly love music for the art of it, sit down with printed out copies of the lyrics to all the songs on the album. Sit down and really soak it all in.

Tower records has picked up distribution of Chaste machine on the net. Sister Ray in the historic SoHo district in London has copies in their stores physically. Jason and the Punknecks have invited me out on the road with them in July through august until I get over to england for those dates. Many record stores, you can go in and ask to order the CD, if you want to support your independant record store, which I suggest. Journal entry - May 31, 2006

Hey all, if all is who you are. I just signed on the dotted line, a publishing contract with Nappy Cat out of Nashville. I'm exceptionally happy, my CD breaks today. So much work to be done, I haven't celebrated at all, and no ones offering either. This tedium since I recorded this music has been taxing. The recording went so flawlessly, even with all the little bumps and errors. Songs just..appeared in my mouth, which is really the case with Hold on and Skinwalker, they really, were just THERE, I recorded them both in a couple of takes really. Anyway, with out giving away any secrets, it wasn't quite that easy to put those two songs together. I digress. I need to get to the road, I need to have smoke surrounding me and talking and glasses clanging and my feet feeling sticky from the floor and to see vague images of folks drinking and watching as I spit out songs. I really like that. I'm a professional songwriter now, with a deal and contract and such as well as a recording artist, I like the way that feels. I like being around my family too, which i haven't enjoyed a whole lot my life. They are a bear to deal with, but really the little ones I enjoy. I'm going to miss them. I've learned how to miss them, I'm happy for that. That's all for now. Hope to see you back sometime.

We're going to have a pre release release of 100 hundred specially designed CD's available starting in June. They're the first and only run and we'll get into full nasty trucker style production. It'' be the offical release, but the first hundred copies are special and tastefully done and designed. All should be gone before my jaunt overseas in July. If anyone wants a copy before they hit Amazon.com and iTunes, and HMV stores, please let myself or my european emissary and spell checker Utah Spike know, and we'll set one aside for you. It's $12 american, and if you get it through me, ill go ahead and do the shipping for you. Look for a review in Q magazine this summer and for my other brown sock..I washed it i KNOW i did!
